Can You Get ADHD Medication Through Telehealth?

What the current rules say about getting ADHD medication through telehealth in 2026, including stimulants, non-stimulants, and state differences.

✓Medically reviewed by Dr. Kelechi Onyiriuka, PharmD · Published October 12, 2026

Telehealth has made ADHD care much easier to reach. But the rules for ADHD medication are different depending on the type of medication and where you live. Here is a plain-language summary as of October 2026.

Non-stimulant medications

Non-stimulant ADHD medications, like atomoxetine (Strattera) and viloxazine (Qelbree), are not controlled substances. A licensed clinician can prescribe them through telehealth after an evaluation, as long as they are licensed in your state.

Stimulant medications

Stimulants, like Adderall, Vyvanse, and Ritalin, are Schedule II controlled substances. That means there are extra federal and state rules.

Federal rules: During the COVID-19 public health emergency, the DEA allowed clinicians to prescribe controlled medications by telehealth without an in-person visit first. Those flexibilities have been extended several times. The current extension runs through December 31, 2026. The DEA is working on permanent rules, but they have not been finalized as of this writing.

State rules: States also have their own rules about who can prescribe stimulants and how. Some states allow nurse practitioners to prescribe Schedule II medications. Others limit it. A clinician must be licensed in the state where you are physically located during your visit.

What this means at Anora

  • Georgia and North Carolina: Our clinicians can prescribe stimulant and non-stimulant medications when clinically appropriate.
  • All other states we serve: Our clinicians prescribe non-stimulant medications only.

A prescription is never guaranteed. It always depends on your evaluation, health history, and what is safe for you.

Be careful with any service that promises medication

A trustworthy provider will never promise a specific medication before evaluating you. Be cautious with websites that advertise fast stimulant prescriptions, skip the evaluation, or do not tell you who your clinician is.

What happens if the rules change?

If federal rules change after December 31, 2026, some patients may need an in-person visit or another step to keep getting stimulant prescriptions by telehealth. If that happens, we will contact affected patients directly and update this page.

The bottom line

You can get ADHD medication through telehealth. Non-stimulants are widely available online. Stimulants depend on federal rules, your state, and your clinician's judgment.
