How to Prepare for Your ADHD Evaluation

A little preparation can make your ADHD evaluation more accurate and less stressful. You do not need to study or prove anything. You just need to give your clinician a clear picture of your life.

Before your evaluation

Write down your main concerns. What made you look into ADHD now? Maybe you keep missing deadlines, you lose things daily, or you feel exhausted from trying so hard to keep up. Write down two or three real examples.

Think about childhood. ADHD starts in childhood, even if nobody noticed. Ask yourself:

  • Did teachers say you were smart but did not apply yourself?
  • Did you daydream, talk a lot, or have trouble sitting still?
  • Did you wait until the last minute on homework?

Gather what you have. Old report cards, teacher comments, or any past testing can help. If you do not have them, that is fine.

Ask someone who knows you. A partner, parent, or close friend may notice things you do not. Ask them how they would describe your focus, organization, and follow-through.

List your medications. Include prescriptions, supplements, and how much caffeine and alcohol you usually have.

On the day of your evaluation

  • Get a normal night of sleep if you can.
  • Eat a regular meal.
  • Find a quiet room for the cognitive test.
  • Use a laptop or desktop for the test if possible.
  • Be honest. There are no right or wrong answers.

Wondering if it is ADHD? Start a same-day evaluation. Evaluations start at $195.

Questions to ask your clinician

  • What did my results show, in plain language?
  • Could anything else explain my symptoms?
  • What treatment options make sense for me?
  • What are the benefits and side effects of each option?
  • What happens at follow-up visits?

The bottom line

The best preparation is honest reflection. Bring real examples, think back to childhood, and give yourself a quiet space for the test. Your clinician will take it from there.

Common questions

Should I stop drinking coffee before my ADHD evaluation?+

You do not need to change your normal routine. Just avoid taking much more caffeine than usual on the day of your cognitive test.

What if I do not remember my childhood well?+

That is very common. Old report cards or a short talk with a parent or sibling can help, but you can still be evaluated without them.
