ADHD can make some parts of work harder, like open offices, long meetings, or unclear deadlines. Small changes can make a big difference. In many cases, you have a legal right to ask for them.

Your rights under the ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects workers with disabilities at employers with 15 or more employees. ADHD can qualify when it substantially limits activities like concentrating, thinking, or working. Employers must provide reasonable accommodations unless doing so causes undue hardship.

Common ADHD accommodations

  • Noise-canceling headphones or a quieter workspace
  • Written instructions after meetings
  • Breaking big projects into smaller deadlines
  • Regular check-ins with your manager
  • Flexible start times or remote work days
  • Extra time for some tasks
  • Permission to use timers, apps, or reminders
  • Fewer interruptions during focused work blocks

How to ask

  1. 1Decide what you need. Focus on specific problems and specific solutions.
  2. 2Check your company's process. Many employers route requests through HR.
  3. 3Put it in writing. A short email is enough. Say you are requesting an accommodation for a medical condition and list what would help.
  4. 4Provide documentation if asked. Your employer may ask for a letter from your clinician.
  5. 5Keep it collaborative. The law calls this an "interactive process." Your employer may suggest other options.

What to say

You might write: "I am requesting a workplace accommodation for a medical condition. It would help me do my best work to receive written summaries after meetings and to have two focused work blocks each week without meetings."

What documentation includes

A clinician letter usually confirms that you have a condition, how it affects your work, and which accommodations may help. It does not need to share your full medical history.

Accommodations at Anora

After your evaluation, Anora clinicians can provide documentation to support workplace or school accommodation requests when appropriate. You can request letters through your patient portal.

The bottom line

Asking for accommodations is not asking for special treatment. It is asking for the tools you need to do your job well.
